Swieqi United FC – 2024/25 Season Review Across All Competitive Squads

The 2024/25 season represented one of the most comprehensive and successful campaigns in Swieqi United’s history, marked by competitive excellence across senior football, women’s football, youth development, and futsal. The club’s performances reflected a maturing sporting structure, a strong developmental pipeline, and a growing ability to compete consistently at the upper end of Maltese football across multiple disciplines.

The men’s senior team continued to consolidate its position as a credible Challenge League contender throughout the campaign. Building on recent seasons of progress, Swieqi maintained competitiveness across the league phase and remained firmly within the promotion discussion for extended periods. While ultimate promotion remained narrowly out of reach, the season was characterised by improved consistency, tactical discipline, and resilience against direct rivals. The squad demonstrated a stronger defensive base compared to prior years, while continuing to show attacking threat through structured build-up play rather than reliance on individual moments. The campaign further reinforced Swieqi’s status as a stable and ambitious Challenge League side, laying solid foundations for a renewed promotion push in 2025/26.

The women’s senior team delivered a historic season, securing the Assikura Women’s League title for the first time in the club’s history. Swieqi finished top of the league table after 23 matches, recording 16 wins, 3 draws, and 4 defeats, accumulating 51 points. The statistical profile of the campaign underlined the team’s dominance: 60 goals scored, and just 12 conceded, producing a league-best goal difference of +48. This defensive solidity, combined with consistent attacking output, allowed Swieqi to finish ahead of strong competition from Mgarr United, Birkirkara, and Hibernians. The title was the culmination of a season defined by tactical maturity, squad depth, and an ability to manage pressure during the decisive stages of the championship run-in.

In addition to league success, the women’s senior side also lifted the Assikura Women’s Super Cup, defeating Birkirkara Women 2–1 on 8 December 2024 at the Centenary Stadium. This victory further underlined Swieqi’s emergence as a leading force in Maltese women’s football and provided early silverware that set the tone for the remainder of the season. While the league title remains the standout achievement, the Super Cup success reinforced the team’s ability to perform in high-stakes, single-match scenarios against elite opposition.

At the youth level, Swieqi United’s women’s development programme continued to set national benchmarks. The Women’s Youth Team dominated Phase 1 of the Assikura National Women’s Youth League, finishing with a perfect record of 12 wins from 12 matches, scoring 50 goals and conceding just 3, for a goal difference of +47. This flawless league phase confirmed Swieqi’s depth and technical superiority at the youth level, with performances characterised by aggressive pressing, positional discipline, and a clear continuity of playing philosophy from youth to senior squads.

That dominance carried into the Assikura Women’s Youth Knock-Out, where Swieqi completed the season with cup success. The youth side defeated Valletta 5–1 in the semi-final before overcoming Hibernians 2–0 in the final at the Centenary Stadium on 11 May 2025. The double achievement of an unbeaten league phase and a Knock-Out title further cemented Swieqi’s reputation as the leading force in women’s youth football in Malta, and reinforced the effectiveness of the club’s long-term investment in female player development.

The women’s Under-17 team also delivered a strong and competitive season. Competing in the national structure, the side consistently matched the country’s strongest academies and demonstrated continued progression in both results and performances. While narrowly missing out on silverware, the Under-17 squad showed clear improvement in defensive organisation and transitional play, with several players earning opportunities to train or feature with the Women’s Youth Team. Their season reflected a successful bridging phase between grassroots development and elite youth competition.

On the men’s youth side, the Under-17 team enjoyed an outstanding campaign in the BNF National League D. Swieqi topped Phase 1 of the league with 9 wins from 10 matches, scoring 42 goals and conceding just 6, finishing on 27 points. That momentum continued into the Top 6 phase, where Swieqi once again finished strong, ending the extended competition with 11 wins from 13 matches, 48 goals scored, 8 conceded, and 33 points. This dominant performance secured promotion and confirmed Swieqi U-17s as one of the strongest side in their section, highlighting a season defined by attacking efficiency, defensive control, and competitive consistency.

The men’s Under-15 team faced a more challenging campaign in the BNF National League B Play-Out. Competing against physically strong and tactically experienced opposition, Swieqi finished third in the play-out standings with 15 points from 18 matches. While the season proved demanding, it offered valuable developmental exposure for a young squad navigating a higher competitive level. The campaign emphasised learning, resilience, and long-term progression rather than short-term results, with several players gaining experience that will be critical for future age-group advancement.

Beyond outdoor football, Swieqi United’s futsal department continued its upward trajectory. Competing in Malta’s top futsal structures, the section consolidated its position among the country’s leading sides and maintained strong competitiveness across league and knockout formats. The department’s growth however proved unsustainable and the sector was discontinued at the end of the 2024/25 season.

In summary, the 2024/25 season stands as a landmark year for Swieqi United FC. The women’s senior league title, the Super Cup triumph, dominant performances in women’s youth competitions, promotion-winning success at the Under-17 level, and continued competitiveness across men’s football and futsal collectively illustrate a club operating with clarity of vision and structural coherence. Swieqi United now enters the next season not merely as a participant across competitions, but as a recognised standard-bearer for sustainable growth, youth development, and competitive ambition within Maltese football.
