04.02.19 U19 KO: History for Owls as they beat Melita!
Swieqi United's U19 squad moved on to the Quarter-Final stage of the Youth Knockout competition for the third year in succession with an historic 3-2 win over regional rivals Melita, with the result being the first ever win against Melita in the Club's short history.
Swieqi United came out of the blocks quickly, and within three minutes, were already ahead. Tejumola Ayorinde's goal bound shot was somehow bundled off the line, but Charles Ndefru ensured that the goal stood by smashing the ball home. The rest of the first half saw an intense midfield battle between the two teams, with the Orange having the better of the chances but not managing to further capitalise on their opportunities.
As the second half began, in search of an equalising goal, Melita became more exposed at the back, leading to Swieqi United playing more often on the counter-attack. Three goals in the span of a few minutes then changed the complexion of the game completely. The team's second goal came after Ayorinde put pressure on the opposition goalkeeper, who, under pressure, lost possession right in front of his own goalpost, enabling the said Ayorinde to tap in the easiest of finishes. Melita then grabbed one back almost instantaneously from a well taken corner kick, but soon after, Ayorinde scored his second of the night with a smart finish from just inside the box. As Melita scored from another corner with around ten minutes to go, the Reds piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser, but to no avail, thereby confirming Swieqi United's first ever victory over their regional rivals. Well done, Orange!
