14.10.18 Women U19: Debut win for Swieqi United
Swieqi United certainly gave their opponents a strong challenge in the first match of the season. The entire match was played with eight players for Swieqi United while the opposing team was made up of nine players. Despite this and considering that this was Swieqi United’s debut match for their Under 19’s women’s squad, the final result was certainly a satisfactory one.
Swieqi United maintained strong possession of the ball in the first half of the matchand also had a number of shots on target by Celeste Grech, Shakira Camilleri and Shakira Bugeja.
The first goal was scored by Celeste Grech in the 30th minute by a free kick which tapped the goal keeper and slid into the goal post. The second goal, scored by Shakira Bugeja, was also from a free kick shot into right corner of the goal post. The third and final goal of the match was scored following a through-ball by Shakira Camilleri to Laure Dewaele, who with a single touch slid the ball into the goal post.
In the second half, players could sense the pressure building from the opposing team as fatigue grew and the ground became slippery. A near miss was the through-ball by Celeste Grech to Shakira Camilleri who got it past the goalkeeper, however the shot was too narrow and deflected off the post. Another potential opportunity was the free kick by Celeste Grech aiming for the top of the goalpost, narrowly missing the target.
The U19’s squad look forward to their next challenge in two weeks’ time when they will take on Hibernians.
