21.04.16 Seniors victory reflects Minors' success
The club's policy of blooding in youngsters whenever needed has certainly paid dividends this year. Granted, it's always a risk to play young players but Swieqi United always felt their Minors could deliver when needed.
As stated by Vice-President Michael Calleja: 'Throughout the past three years, we have been working very hard to ensure we have a very strong Minors team. Despite it being their first year in Section D, our 19s ended up in a very respectable 3rd place. This goes to show that our talent pool at this level is very healthy and the young players' enthusiasm spilled over into the Seniors squad.'
Indeed, Mark Martin's decisive goal vs Kirkop was the icing on the cake as once again, the 19s came to the rescue to ensure the Senior squad maintained their status in Second Division. 'I thought our Seniors players played very well on Sunday but the coaching staff were willing to blood in the youngsters too throughout the campaign and they certainly made a difference' continued Michael. 'This season, we introduced a number of players to the Seniors fold most notably: Luca Borg, Nathan Chatland, Benji Frendo, Dean Grech, Jon David Ferry, Mark Martin, Thomas Camilleri, Gary Portelli, Edward Gatt, Ryan Muscat Verzin and Thomas Philip Debono. Add to those players, Luke Pace, Nicky Schembri and Matteo Caribotti also played regularly for both age groups and we're not going to stop there. We're going to continue giving young players the opportunity to shine. This is our philosophy'.
It goes without saying that the 19s will continue to grow stronger year after year. With new and ambitious young players willing to contribute to the Seniors squad on a regular basis, it is certainly only a matter of time before more young players join the club. The results speak for themselves and youth is certainly forming the key ingredient of success at Swieqi United!
