12.04.15 Futsal: Swieqi put on a show against Valletta
Swieqi and Valletta faced off last Friday in a match in which the winner was nearly guaranteed a much sought after play-off spot. Valletta began brightly and soon found themselves leading 2-0 after two quick successive goals. Swieqi were taken aback by the surge of Valletta and soon the score was doubled to read 4-0. Swieqi pulled a goal back through Patrick Kimmi to make it 4-1, however Valletta added another goal to make it 5-1 after a brilliant freekick by Xavier Saliba. Andrew Decesare pulled another goal back for Swieqi with both sets of teams heading into half time 5-2 in Valletta's favour.
Many thought that Swieqi were dead and buried. However what was witnessed in the second half can possibly be described as the best half witnessed in a futsal match in Malta to date. Swieqi raided Valletta's half, leaving their opponents nervous and clueless. Fredrick Johnson, Patrick Kimmi and Deceseare pulled Swieqi back into the game and the scoreline read 5-4. Valletta gave themselves some breathing space making it 6-4 and Johnson was unlucky to see his shot hit the post! Swieqi pulled another goal bake making it 6-5 but their joy was shortlived when Valletta made it 7-5. However Swieqi didn't give up and kept on surging into attack after attack. Their efforts paid off making the scoreline 7-6. Having already committed five fouls, Valletta played a nervous last two minutes in which Swieqi threw everything they had to try and find an equaliser. In the dying split seconds Sammut Alessi shot from his own half which nearly grabbed a draw for Swieqi.
