09.02.15 U17s fall short

Swieqi 2 – 4 Gzira

The game began as scheduled at 9 am. Swieqi United started off very well, keeping possession and then pressing high to steal the ball from Gzira. A good through ball by L.Gatt and Martin smashed it past the keeper for 1-0 after a measly 3 minutes. Swieqi held on to the lead for at least half an hour with some good play by B.Caruana Montaldo and Vella before Gzira started to show their hunger. The maroons were denied by the post before overpowering the men in blue to score two goals in quick succession.

Coach Paul Gatt opted for a 3-4-3 formation in the second half with substitute Dimech taking the left flank and Galea on the right with Johnson up front. Tortell and L.Caruana Montaldo as LCM and RCM and Zammit in front of the three centre-backs, Sant Fournier, B.Caruana Montaldo and L.Gatt. The second half started much like the first, Swieqi came out hungry for goals. It came with a wonderful left-footed freekick over the wall from L.Caruana Montaldo. Once again it was not to be for Swieqi. Gzira took their opportunities and again scored two goals in quick succession to extend their lead to two goals. Sammut Mifsud, N.Galea and Panzavecchia came on as Swieqi tried to salvage a point. It was not to be however as Martin, Panzavecchia and Johnson all tried their luck towards the end to no avail.
