29.04.12 Swieqi U. 1 Marsaskala 2
Lacklustre Swieqi side falls down to Mskala
A Swieqi United side, bereft of major dangermen Eddy Grima and John Debono, suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of newcomers Marsaskala FC. The Orange controlled proceedings in the first half, as the Swieqi players kept possession and with patience tried to penetrate the tough Marsaskala rearguard. Jeremy Pace came close to scoring his maiden goal for Swieqi when he was put through splendidly by Peter Spiteri, but Peplow in the Marsaskala goal had other ideas, and kept the score at a stalemate. On 28 minutes Mark Said made the most of a static Swieqi defence and rounded keeper Edwards to plant the ball at the back of the net for what should have been one of his easiest goals in his career.
36 minutes into the first half, a scuffle broke out between players on both sides. Marsaskala number 18 Juan Galdes was sent off but proceeded to punch Swieqi captain Simon Borg before exiting the pitch. The referee failed to notice this incident.
Swieqi started the second half enthusiastically, however, Marsaskala doubled their lead against the run of play, after Felix Peplow delivered a long ball to Nazzareno Abela who, after beating two Swieqi defenders, powered the ball past a hapless Edwards.
The Boys in Orange continued their seige on the Marsaskala goal. One of the number of crosses sent in finallly presented Simon Borg with the opportunity to halve the deficit.
The Swieqi reaction came too late in the game however, and the Orange Army were left reeling with a surprise defeat against one of the newest outfits in the MFA 3rd Division.
