12.04.18 U17: Swieqi extend unbeaten run
Swieqi United continued their recent fine form with a vital victory against Zejtun last Sunday, knowing fully well that a positive result would continue to up the pressure on second placed Qormi FC.
The Owls had a strong start to the game, as Timmy Naudi missed from a sitter from close range in the opening minutes. Following this early chance, it was all Swieqi, with Andrew Mallia and Sasha Peric having attempts on goal, but despite this early pressure, Zejtun took the lead following a quick counter attack. Just before half time, Peric was clean through on goal, but saw his shot cannon off the post. The first half therefore ended with Swieqi trailing 1-0.
The Orange levelled early in the second half, with an Andrew Mallia assist for Timmy Naudi, who didn't miss from close range. Fifteen minutes in, Swieqi thought they had the lead, as Mallia once again crossed in the box to Naudi, who scored with a spectacular overhead kick. However, celebrations were cut short, as the goal was ruled out for offside. Nonetheless, the Orange were not to be denied, as ten minutes from the end, Isaac Camilleri curled the ball into the net to give Swieqi a well deserved lead.
The game ended with a 2-1 win for Swieqi, with the squad now only two points behind second placed Qormi. The team next face Birzebbugia on Saturday 14 April at Birzebbugia ground.
