Swieqi U. 2 Xghajra Tornados 0

17.10.11 Swieqi U. 2 Xghajra Tornados 0

It was a game Swieqi simply had to win, and boy did they deliver! Xghajra were certainly pumped up before the game as they sought to vanquish memories of the humiliating 0-8 scoreline they suffered last April.

Notwithstanding this fact, Xghajra were on a very good run themselves and the bookies would have certainly expected the greens to clock up another three points against the Orange.

But whilst Swieqi have completely revamped the squad and brought in new players, the determination to spoil Xghajra's premeditated party was extremely evident on the Swieqi players. Indeed, the greens were not prepared for 90 mins of an orange onslaught.

From the moment the game kicked off, Swieqi had the upper hand winning some good free kicks and corners, dominating territory but failing to find that elusive goal.

The turning point of the game came when Simon Psaila was brought down and denied a clear goal scoring opportunity leaving the referee with no choice but to dismiss the Xghajra defender. Thereupon, Swieqi pressed forward and after some good work by Benoit Buhagiar, Simon Psaila raced down the wing, delivered an inch perfect pass to Fabien Debono who buried his shot past the keeper. 1-0 at Half time.

The Second Half was a repetition of much of the first. Swieqi dominated possession and territory whilst Xghajra tried to make a breakthrough but there was no chance of that thanks to the backline of Nicky Zammit and Kyle Calleja.

Despite some good moments in the game, Swieqi could not wrap up the game and coach Roland Sollars introduced midfield maestro John Debono for the latter stages of the match. His marauding runs and bustling energy were no match for a tired Xghajra team as a bursting break into the box from Debono found a completely unmarked Fabien Debono who lashed his shot past the Xghajra keeper. 2-0 and game set and match.

Xghajra then hit the post with a cross shot whilst Swieqi missed a golden chance to make it 3-0 after John Debono missed the post by a whisker. At the final whistle, the smiles on the Swieqi players and committee was evident for all to see as a much needed win against a very good side came at the right time!

Swieqi next face a cracker against high flyers Mgarr United on Sunday 23rd October.
