30.01.17 Swieqi make life tough for league leaders
Swieqi United and Zejtun played out an entertaining encounter in wet and windy conditions at the Luxol Stadium. The Orange fought valiantly against the best team in the division but were ultimately outdone by two well taken goals.
It was Swieqi who started the brighter of the two sides with the Orange going close through Nicky Schembri and Roderick Taliana. However, it was Zejtun who scored first with a brilliantly executed free kick. Despite incessant assaults on the Zejtun goal, the Blues doubled the lead against the run of play when Zejtun's stiker avoided the offside trap to hit the ball past the hapless Sam Bartolo.
Such is the nature of this Swieqi team that they genuinely refuse to give up. On 45 minutes, Roderick Talian's low powerful drive from a free kick resulted in the ball in the back of the net to make the score 1-2 at half-time.
With the Corinthians bringing on Anthony Ewurum at half time, things got tougher for the Orange but they still created chances to score. Unfortunately, the Zejtun rear-guard held firm and denied Swieqi that vital chance. Deep into stoppage time, Dean Grech and Roderick Taliana went close but it was not to be - and a highly-fought encounter ended with the Southerners just managing to see out proceedings. Nevertheless, a job well done for Swieqi, who genuinely challenged the league leaders.
