22.04.16 Seniors: Swieqi keeps making history
Swieqi United's crucial 2-0 win vs Kirkop was perhaps one of the most important results in the club's history. Buoyed on by a great crowd [and according to our records, the biggest ever crowd to watch Swieqi], the players rose to the occasion and ensured they finally delivered the three crucial points they had been waiting for (Patrick Briscoe White and Mark Martin with the all important goals). It was a truly great moment for a club with a short but already very rich history! We look back at five other famous games the Men in Orange played:
5 other famous Swieqi Wins:
1. Swieqi United 3-1 Santa Lucija (2009/10)
The stakes couldn't have been any higher! In Swieqi's maiden season, they needed to beat Santa Lucija in order to avoid finishing last in the 3rd Division. Things certainly were not going the Orange's way when Denzil Scerri De Carlo was sent off before half time and Swieqi were 0-1 down. What happened next was the stuff of legend - Swieqi bounced back and scored three great goals thanks to: Daniel Bianco, Edward Vella and John Debono. Swieqi ended the campaign on 16 points thus finishing above Qrendi and Santa Lucija!
2. Swieqi United 8-0 Xghajra Tornadoes (2010/11)
The Seniors' biggest ever victory and a truly outstanding performance. On a day when games were still being played on Sunday mornings, the Orange had clearly slept well as they pulverised Xghajra 8-0 at the Centenary Stadium. Victor Kamara scored 2 goals followed by John Debono (2), Wildon Vella (2), Eric Sciberras and Fabien Debono. A truly fantastic show by Swieqi!
3. Swieqi United 2-1 Mdina Knights (2012/13)
Roland Sollars was at the helm when Swieqi faced up to Mdina in the FA Trophy Knock Out fixture at the Centenary Stadium. Mdina, a very well organised club, had up to that point always beaten Swieqi and were rated as one of the best teams in the third division. The Knights would eventually win promotion that season to Division 2, but on a windy night at Ta' Qali, the Orange played magnificently, beating Mdina 2-1 thanks to a late equaliser by Shaun Decesare with Matthew Fenech wrapping up the win in Extra-time!
4. Swieqi United 1-0 Mtarfa (2013/14)
Perhaps, Swieqi's biggest and most significant game to date! Needing a win to seal promotion to Second Division, a very tense encounter ensued at Luxol Stadium! Haruna Doda had gone agonisingly close for Mtarfa when his free kick hit the post and the Orange, seemingly nervous, wasted many good chances to score. Thankfully, on 83 minutes Abner Dos Santos's lofted free kick found the season sensation Kenneth Ekezie whose header in the back of the net sealed a historic promotion to second division!
5. Swieqi United 2-0 Zejtun Corinthians (2014/15)
For a team that had demolished Swieqi 5-0 and 3-0 back in 2010, Zejtun were considered one of the forerunners of the Second Division. Swieqi, on the other hand were navigating through unchartered waters in second division and had yet to establish their credentials. Having already beaten Mellieha 4-0 on the opening day, this game was different. Played in horrible and wet conditions, Swieqi comprehensively outplayed Zejtun with goals from Kurt Pisani and beauty from Jeremy Gatt Coleiro. It remains a celebrated victory for two reasons...firstly, Swieqi had made it clear they would be no pushovers in Second Division and the win ensured they could also mix it with the best when needed!
