Impressive Swieqi start sees off inexistent Qrendi
The worst patch of form in the club’s short history was brought to a halt with a resounding 4-0 victory against fellow section B club Qrendi FC. Swieqi were fielding newcomers Simon Borg and Eric Sciberras for the first time, whilst wing-back Mauro Desira was making his second appearance for the club. Swieqi started strongly, and after only four minutes, the result was already 2-0 in their favour. Two identical goals scored by Fabien Debono and John Debono put the Orange in the driving seat. The first goal arose from a timed long-ball by Edward Vella which found captain John Debono alone facing the Qrendi custodian. The captain contrived to miss the first opportunity, but Fabien Debono was on hand to pump in the rebound and give Swieqi United a dream start to the match. Barely two minutes later, and the Orange were 2-0 up. Another long ball from the heart of the Swieqi midfield reached John Debono who had the time and space to get past an opponent and plant the ball at the back of the net. The rest of the first half was pure administration for the Orange. John Debono, who was a constant thorn in the Qrendi back-three, managed to free himself twice on the right wing and squared the ball to Eric Sciberras who could not manage to beat the Qrendi custodian Damazo. Mauro Desira also had a strong central shot blocked by the Qrendi keeper as the two sides went into half-time with the score standing at 2-0.
Qrendi started strongly in the second half, as the greens wanted to recuperate the two-goal deficit incurred in the first half. The southerns had some crosses which were neutralised by Marmara, but quickly lost control of the proceedings. The Orange opted to maintain possession and occasionally sting the Qrendi rearguard with neat through balls and direct runs. John Debono again missed a clear-cut opportunity one-on-one against the Qrendi goalkeeper. From another particular run on the right, John Debono found Matthew Spiteri who inadvertently passed the ball to Eric Sciberras. The newcomer did not hesitate to fire the ball into the top corner of the net for a well-deserved goal. A few minutes later, Swieqi substitute Wildon Vella grabbed the first goal of his Swieqi career after making the most from another John Debono run. The match was now won and lost, although a scuffle broke out between the two sides, an incident which marred the game’s ending.
Swieqi United hope that this 4-0 can prove itself to be the start of a new beginning.
