25.02.15 Swieqi ladies win tale of two halves
If one simply sees the scoreline, one will quickly arrive at the conclusion that this was a one way match. However this was a tale of two halves, albeit wih the help of the dreadful weather conditions that plagued Zebbug Ground throughout the match.
With an eye on the forthcoming Quarter Final v Hibs, the Swieqi coaches decided to rotate their team formation, with Amy Galea Gingell guarding the goal line and Maria Elena Grech earning her first captain's armband for the night.
Swieqi started brightly, however with the wind against them the team couldn't find the power to finish off strong in attack. This gave Lija/Iklin hope in that they could snatch something. Lija did try and surge into attack, however they found a good combination of Swieqi's backline and Galea Gingell on high alert who quickly sorted out any potential danger. In the first half Swieqi only managed one shot on target which was easily dealt with by the Lija custodian.
Clearly not happy with the performance of the first half, the Swieqi coaches changed things around in second half and this quickly showed in the way how the team played the entire second half. A corner by Kate Galea was deflected into the net by the Lija defence and opened up the score 1-0 to Swieqi. The heavens also decided to open up and a strong downpour and high winds made playing conditions even more difficult. However Swieqi didn't let this effect them and quickly found themselves leading 2-0 thanks to Maria Elena Grech.
Caroline Gafa thought she had grabbed the third goal, only to see her goal surprisingly ruled out for allegedly having gone out for a goal kick much to the disappointment of the team and fans. Grech made sure of the win with her second goal, sending a long range shot into an empty net and making the score 3-0. Daniela Casha also got her name on the score sheet after concluding some neat finishing to make the score 4-0. By this point it was completely one way traffic and Maria Elena Grech grabbed her personal hat trick which capped off a great night for her by slotting the ball home after a lovely through ball by Becky Naudi.
In the end it was all smiles for team Swieqi who with this win go top of Section B with 19 points and 3 league games remaining.
The team now turns their attention to the Knock Out Quarter Final on Tuesday 3rd March at 8.15pm v Hibs at Zebbug Ground. We urge you to come and support the ladies in what promises to be a good game of football.
