11.01.15 Seniors defeated in five goal thriller v Mellieha
Swieqi's senior team began their second round commitments with a 3-2 loss vs Mellieha on Friday night at Luxol Stadium.
Swieqi got off to a dream start when Konda surged into attack and broke the deadlock after just 23 seconds, setting a club record for the fastest goal scored.
On the quarter mark, Jeremy Gatt Coleiro committed a foul in the penalty box with the referee not hesitating at all to point to the penalty spot. Mellieha took their golden opportunity and leveled matters 1-1.
Swieqi looked dejected after conceding the penalty and Mellieha ensured that they take full advantage. Swieqi's attacks were very limited and Mellieha soon surged ahead 2-1 and headed into half time in the lead.
Swieqi did come out fighting in the second half, and if it wasn't for some brilliant saves produced by the Mellieha custodian, Swieqi could have easily leveled matters. To be fair Matthew Sapiano also kept Swieqi in the game, producing a stunning save when the ball almost certainly seem to be goal bound for Mellieha.
Swieqi were caught napping once again defensively and Mellieha pounced to make it 3-1. Swieqi players could not believe the score and this showed in their performance limiting their shots in attack and resorting to long ball tactics. Towards the end of the match Swieqi did manage to pull a goal back through an own goal and gave Mellieha a brief scare, however the Norterners managed to hold on for a well deserved victory.
