08.09.13 Dos Santos double hands Swieqi victory
Swieqi United were made to fight hard in their maiden competitive match as they had to come from behind to beat plucky Qrendi 3-2 at the Sirens Ground. The match lived up to its billing as being a knock-out competition as sheer drama ensued in the final fifteen minutes. Swieqi began the match well with a good amount of possession but failed to penetrate the Qrendi keeper with the whites defending well. Kenneth Ekezie and Abner Dos Santos missed some good chances especially during the closing minutes of the first half.
After the break, Qrendi seized the initiative and coupled with an injury sustained to Swieqi midfielder Mark Spiteri, began to assert themselves on the proceedings. Qrendi managed to score on the hour when TERENCE CACHIA managed to make good contact with the ball from a cross giving the whites a deserve lead. Swieqi’s response was immediate with a header from Adam Wingfield finding Brazilian ABNER DOS SANTOS whose close range strike gave the Qrendi keeper no chance to save it. A lucky long ball was not cleared by the Swieqi defence which allowed STEFI CALZ to head the ball past the Swieqi keeper thereupon making the score 2-1 to Qrendi.
Thereupon, Swieqi began to dominate proceedings with Wingfield switching to the midfield. The Orange were rewarded when on 85 minutes, TUNDZHAY KURTULUSH managed to bang the ball past the Qrendi keeper before managing to win a penalty four minutes later. The Turk attempted to glide past a Qrendi defender only to be fouled in the penalty area. ABNER DOS SANTOS then duly converted the kick and ensured Swieqi qualified to the next round of the competition.
